Raketenjagdpanzer 2 ATGM Tank Destroyer |
|
The Raketenjagdpanzer 2 was developed from the Kanonenjagdpanzer to replace the ATGM launchers that were based on the HS-30 chassis, and 316 of these new vehicles were procured.
The Raketenjagdpanzer 2 essentially had the same hull as the Kanonenjagdpanzer, except that the main gun was removed from the glacis, and replaced by two French-designed SS-11 ATGMs. The left launcher could fire in an arc from 9 to 12 o'clock, and the right launcher could fire from 12 to 3 o'clock. The SS-11 had a minimum range of 800m, and a maximum range of 3,000m. The launchers could also be removed and operated either remotely to a distance of 70m, or operated independently of the vehicle altogether. A total of 14 ATGMs were carried. The vehicle was also armed with a 7.62mm machinegun fitted to a ball mount in the glacis, plus another 7.62mm machine gun fitttd to the hull roof for air defense. In 1978 the Raketenjagdpanzer 2 was upgraded to the Jaguar 1 and armed with HOT ATGMs that had a maximum range of 3,800m; 20 HOT missiles could be carried. These vehicles were formed into independent anti-tank companies until 1995, when the companies were disbanded and the Jaguars were distributed in 5-vehicle platoons, one for each mechanized infantry battalion. Eighty of them were also sold to Austria in 1997.
