In the early 1970s, the Bundeswehr submitted a requirement to develop two high-mobility experimental vehicles fitted with twin main guns and capable of high rates of fire. MaK was given the contract, and built the vehicles on shortened MBT-70 hulls.
Experimental Vehicle 1-1 was fitted with twin 105mm guns, stabilized in elevation, and a modified MBT873 engine that output 2,000hp, giving the vehicle a power to weight ratio of 50hp per ton.Experimental Vehicle 1-2 had twin smoothbore 120mm guns, fed by autoloaders, that had a rate of fire of 10 to 12 rounds per minute, plus an engine developing 2,200hp. In both cases, the guns could only be laid in elevation, with traverse being accomplished by rotating the entire vehicle, similar to the Swedish S-Tank.Both vehicles had a three man crew - commander, gunner, and driver - all positioned at the front of the vehicle, and each weighed 33 tons. Firing trials for the two vehicles achieved over 80% first round hits with rates of fire of 12 rounds per minute.Three additional vehicles were built and equipped with dummy weapons and laser simulators. The vehicle on display, Vehicle 04, was built in 1975-1976 and incorporates an enhanced target acquisition and tracking system.
