Universal Carrier Mk III (Bren Gun Carrier) |
|
The Universal Carrier (also known as the Bren Gun carrier) was a British light armored personnel carrier developed in the 1930s. It was the first armored personnel carrier that saw service with the Commonwealth forces.
It had thin armor and an open top that provided relatively little protection for the crew of three to four men. It was normally armed with a machine gun or anti-tank rifle, but also served as the base for numerous variants (flame thrower, radio carrier, command vehicle, and anti-tank gun prime mover). The German Army made good use of them during the war as makeshift weapons platforms (in one case mounting the 37mm Pak 35/36 on a pedestal mount above the engine), as well as ammunition carriers and prime movers. After the war, Universal Carriers were used by the Bundeswehr in reconnaissance and supply companies up until the mid-1950s.
