88mm Flak 37 Anti-Aircraft Gun |
|
The famous 88mm Flugabwehrkanone (Flak) cannon was developed at the end of World War I and was first used in combat in the Spanish Civil War. This weapon was used in its designed anti-aircraft role, but also saw extensive service in use against ground and even naval targets.
The original 88mm Flak 18 was improved and fielded as the 8.8cm Flak 36 and 37, which were the basis for the 88mm anti-tank weapons that was the bane of Allied crewmen. The Flak versions of the 88mm weapon were mounted on a cruciform carriage, and sometimes was fitted with an armor shield. It was transported with two detachable sets of wheels, with the side stabilizers folding up for travel. Due to its weight and size it was normally only pulled by heavy half-tracks or tractors.
