M113 Armored Personnel Carrier |
|
The M113A1G mortar carrier is based on the ubiquitous M113 armored personnel carrier. Over 80,000 M113s of all variants were built, and this simple, adaptable, and reliable vehicle remains in service in many countries around the world.
The M113 has a box-shaped aluminum hull that is full enclosed in the armored personnel carrier version. It has five road wheels per side, no return rollers, a front sprocket, and rear idler. The earlier versions had a Chrysler V8 water-cooled gasoline engine, but this was eventually replaced by a GMC Detroit Diesel engine. It is fully amphibious, and is propelled through the water by its tracks. The M113A1G was designed to provide organic indirect fire support for mechanized infantry units. Its main weapon is the 120mm muzzle-loaded mortar, which is mounted on a rotating base plate and fires through a large roof hatch. The weapon has a rate of fire of 6 rounds per minute, and has a maximum effective range of 6,200m. The vehicle also has an externally mounted 7.62mm machine gun as secondary armament. The Bundeswehr is a major user of the M113, with roughly 4,000 vehicles of various types in service (although many are being replaced by the Marder series of Infantry Fighting Vehicles). Some of the M113’s many variants include: - Command post vehicles
- Mine-layers
- Fire support & observation vehicles
- Artillery radar vehicles
- Field ambulances
