Volkswagen Type 166 Schimmwagen |
|
The Volkswagen Type 166 Schwimmkübel (a.k.a. Schwimmwagen) was based on the Type 82 Kübelwagen, and was intended to replace the motorcycles with sidecars in the light reconnaissance role. It could navigate most any type of terrain, and with its amphibious capability it could also cross water obstacles without any preparation other than extending its retractable propeller.
The Schwimmkübel, like the Type 82 Kübelwagen, had four wheels, plus four-wheel drive, and was powered by a 4-cylinder 25hp air-cooled engine mounted in the rear. However, the Type 166 was also fitted with a retractable 3-bladed propeller for use in the water.
