SdKfz 234 Armored Car with 75mm Gun |
|
The SdKfz 234/4, which was often referred to as the Pakwagen, was based on the SdKfz 234 eight-wheeled heavy armored car, but had the turret removed and a 75mm gun installed in the superstructure.
The vehicle was armed with the long-barreled PaK 40 L/46: the complete anti-tank gun (minus trails) was mounted in an open superstructure on a pedestal mount with limited traverse. Like the other vehicles in the SdKfz 234 family, the Pakwagen was powered with a 12-cylinder air-cooled Tatra diesel engine that was designed to operate in the extreme climates of North Africa and Russia. The vehicle had 8-wheel drive and all-wheel steering, and featured both front and rear driver positions (the loader acted as the rear driver). Only 99 SdKfz 234/4 Pakwagens were built, although production continued until March 1945. The vehicle was normally issued to the headquarters companies of armored reconnaissance units. The vehicle on display was captured by British troops in April 1945, and was later given to the Panzertruppenschule in January 1975 by the British Armour School at Bovington. It was renovated by the Panzertruppenschule in 1975-76.
