SdKfz 251 Half-Track with 75mm Gun |
|
One of the many variants of the SdKfz 251, the SdKfz 251/9 (nicknamed Stummel) was based on the SdKfz 251 Ausf. D, which had a much simpler arrangement of armored plates on the hull. The SdKfz 251/9 had its origins in late March 1942, when the firm of Büssing-Nag was ordered to design a mounting for the old short-barreled 75mm KwK 40 L/43 weapon that had originally been fitted to the early PzKfw IV tanks.
In June 1942, two prototypes were sent to the Russian front for field tests. Based on their success, an order was placed for 150 of the vehicles. The gun had a range of 3500m, and was used by the Panzergrenadiers against field fortifications and combat in urban terrain.
