The Soviet T-62 MBT was a further refinement of the T-54/55 series, and became the standard battle tank in Soviet armored formations in the 1960s.
The T-62 was armed with a 115mm smooth bore main gun that fires Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot (APFSDS), High-Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT), and High-Explosive (HE) ammunition. The basic load consists of 40 115mm rounds. Secondary armament comprises a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and a 12.7mm machine gun mounted on the turret roof for air defense. The gunner and commander also have infrared night vision equipment, and the vehicle is also fitted with an NBC protection system. The vehicle's suspension is made up of five road wheels with large gaps between the third, fourth, and fifth wheels; there is a front idler, no return rollers, and a sprocket at the rear, driven by a 580hp water-cooled diesel engine. The T-62 could also carry external fuel stowed in drums at the back of the vehicle. The T-62 was replaced in service by the later T-64, T-72, and T-80 tanks.
