Sturmpanzer IV Brummbär Assault Gun |
|
The Sturmpanzer IV Brummbär (SdKfz 166) 150mm assault gun was introduced to provide fire support against heavily fortified targets and stronpoints. This vehicle was based on the Panzer IV chassis, was heavily armored, and was armed with a short-barreled low-velocity 150mm gun. While the initial production vehicles lacked any secondary armament, later Sturmpanzer IV's were fitted with a ball-mounted 7.92mm machine gun firing through the hull glacis, plus another machine gun on the hull roof for air defense. All production vehicles also had a pistol port on each side of the superstructure.
The main gun, a modified 150mm infantry howitzer fitted in a ball mount, had a maximum effective range of 4,300m. A total of 43 rounds of 150mm ammunition could be stowed in the vehicle. The first Brummbärs were issued to Sturmpanzerabteilung 216 and rushed to the Eastern front to take part in the Kursk offensive. Three additional units - Sturmanzerabteilung 217, 218, and 219 - were formed and fought on both fronts. A total of 306 Sturmpanzer IVs were built between 1943 and 1945.The vehicle on display was a gift from the French Armor School to the Panzermuseum and the town of Munster in August 1993, after having been restored by the Army Museum in Dresden.
