The Truth About the T-34 (Moscow Atlantis Publishers, 2005) is a unique compendium of information and probably the last word - albeit in Russian - on this famous vehicle.
Written by the team that recently established the T-34 Tank Museum outside of Moscow, and based largely on the materials and exhibits that are now part of the museum, The Truth About the T-34 boasts 480 pages in A4 page size.
The book features never before published technical information on the T-34, designs, specifications, rare b/w and color photos, copies of historical documents and other information collected by Colonel Igor Zheltov, one of Russia's leading armor experts.
Readers are treated to information once in top secret military archives, describing the tank’s exterior and interior features, camouflage schemes, modifications, guns, engines specifications, combat orders and much more that has not previously been available from other sources.
This book also gives a detailed account of armored vehicle development leading up to the T-34 (the Tridtsatchetverka, as it was nicknamed), including its German, British and American counterparts: all the ideas that eventually led to the development of the T-34 on the eve of WWII.
A great deal of the book is dedicated to the combat history of the T-34 and the pivotal battles on the Eastern Front: Moscow, Stalingrad, Kursk, Vistula and Oder, and Berlin.
A unique feature of The Truth About the T-34 is that much of the first-hand information is based on childhood memories of Larissa Vasilieva, a well-known Russian poet and writer and the daughter of Nickolay Kucherenko, one of the three main designers who created the T-34.
While The Truth About the T-34 is currently only available in Russian, it should definitely be on the wish list for any modeler or history buff interested in this landmark military vehicle. The book is available directly from the T-34 Museum for $50 U.S. For more information, please contact Vladimir Maslov at 34vim@rinet or George Vasiliev at
