Volkswagen Type 82 (Kfz 1) Kübelwagen |
|
The Kfz 1 Kübelwagen utility vehicle was one of the most reliable vehicles of the Wehrmacht, and performed well under even the most adverse weather and terrain conditions.
The Kübelwagen was a military version of the “Volkswagen” (a.k.a. the Beetle, or Bug). Designed by Ferdinand Porsche, it was developed in 1934 and designated the Type 82 (Kfz 1). It was powered by a 4-cylinder air-cooled engine that generated 25hp, although the engine was upgraded in 1943 to provide more power. It had 4 forward and 1 reverse gears, and could reach a top speed of 80 km/hr. It was put into production in 1940, and first saw action in Russia and North Africa. The Kübelwagen saw action on every front during the war, and over 50,435 of them were built. The vehicle on display was renovated in 1985-1986 in the Panzertruppenschule’s workshops.
