A number of M48A2 tanks were modified into Combat Engineer Vehicles by adding a large dozer blade to prepare water crossing sites, grade roads, dig firing positions, and clear rubble and other obstructions.

In this case, the main gun was also removed and the crew reduced to from four to three. The vehicle's only armament was the coaxial 7.62mm machine gun, and the .50 caliber machine gun mounted in the traversing commander's cupola.
